VTS social
As I mentioned at one of the VTS sessions a few weeks ago, I am planning the next two VTS socials:
1. 29/10/2008 - the plan was to go out for dinner or drinks after the AKT. I need to book soon. Could you please reply and let me know if you can make it by 18/10/2008. Does anyone have any preferences where to go and what type of food?
2. 02/12/2008 - Christmas Dinner: I was thinking of booking a table at TAS at London Bridge since I know they have got a big room downstairs. Could you also let me know by 18/10/2008 if you can make it and how many people you'd like to bring.
Looking forward to seeing all soon,
Anja

"All you need to know for Ophthalmology in one day"
“Extremely good- relevant information in clear and concise format”
“Excellent choice of presenters”
”Excellent overall and a very worthwhile course. Good that it kept on concentrating on what is relevant to GP rather than being a summary of secondary care guidelines”

Leadership Development Mentoring Programme
I want to make you aware of an excellent scheme at NHS London, entitled 'Prepare to Lead'. This Leadership Development Mentoring Programme is designed to capture the talent that exists amongst our SpRs and GPRs (and STRs of years ST3+) , and give them leadership development opportunities. I hope we get some dynamic, motivated trainees on this scheme, and wondered if you could encourage any of your trainees who have expressed an interest in management and leadership roles, and/or who you feel would benefit, to apply.
I enclose a file giving details of the scheme and how to apply, which can also be found at http://www.london.nhs.uk/londonnhs-leadingforhealth.aspx?id_Content=7416 Applications must be made to NHS London by 5th March 2008.
I hope you can help support this scheme by encouraging several suitable applicants to apply,
Yours sincerely

Making the Most of your Registrar Year
Providing you with
N.B. For those current ST2s who might be starting their GP component in February 2008 - There will only be one GPR induction day per year in September and we won't be running the one we used to hold in March.
A whole day is spent covering what your year ahead entails. It is exclusively for ST3 trainees at the beginning of their general practice year. The day is jointly organised by your representative committees at the Deanery and the Royal College, the London GP Speciality Training Committee (LGC) and the London Faculties GP Training Committee (LFGC) respectively. The London Deanery has funded the day and it‘s free!
By the end participants will:
- have a clear understanding of the role of the Deanery and the Royal College of GPs
- know how to make the most of your trainer
- overview of the nMRCGP exam, including AKT, CSA & WPBA
- plan the GP year ahead
- browse through all the books you need and purchase them at a discounted rate
- find out all about the London GP Speciality Training Committee and how you can represent your speciality training programme

New Website Address
Tony, who has done a great job looking after this blog for the VTS, is leaving us for pasture new. Thanks Tony for all your effort!
I have volunteered to try and fill his shoes. Please let me know if you would like to be involved with the upkeep of the blog or if there is anything you would like to see on the blog. For example, I have always wanted a more user friendly website address and have managed to obtain the following address for free*:
www.lewishamvts.co.nr
However, I don't like the ".co.nr" and think we can do better. Also with the introduction of the MMC, VTS is outdated now and I think the scheme is now called GP Specialist Training. Therefore, I would appreciate any suggestion for a new website address.
Quyen Nguyen
*Obtained from freedomain.co.nr but they do insist on having their icon (the fish on the right) on our pageThursday, November 02, 2006
Next Term
we would like to use some of the time on 14 and again at the away day on 21 planning for next term.
Please think about your learning needs and how you could use the half day release (and the residential in March) to meet those needs. What topics you would like to cover, what would be your specific objectives and what methods would you like to use?
To help you I have attached a summary of the new MRCGP curriculum (still a draft but the final version wont be much different - the full curriculum is on the RCGP website) and a list of topics covered in previous terms.
There are many topics that are better covered by your trainer, in your hospital post or through personal learning so please suggest things that are better suited to group learning. Remember not to rely too much on "outside speakers" all the time but think about topics that could be presented by VTS members themselves. If there's something you are very interested in or know a lot about and would like to lead a session on - please suggest it.
You can be innovative and imaginative about learning methods. There are the obvious things like presentations, small group discussions, watching videos etc but there are other ways of learning that we could try and its good to have a variety of teaching methods. In the past we have made visits to various places including an exhibition at the British museum, gone to see a play about pain, invited a parent who runs a patient group and probably several others that I cant remember - but you get the idea I hope.

Last night out.......
Sorry haven't been around. Have been on nights and now on holidays. I've narrowed it down to 2 dates: 26 July or 3rd August. I need yes or no to both as then I have an idea of numbers and where to book. Just a simple yes or no is all you have to do.

Free dates that I have so far are:
Thursday 20 July
Friday 21 July
Wednesday 26 July
Thursday 3 August
Thursday 10 August
Plus any of the Tuesday evenings in that period
Yes, a wide selection but I'm trying to optimise numbers.
Also, what would everyone like to do? I would be happy to have a BBQ at my place near London Bridge with or without partners. Or we can head out for another meal at one of London's fine establishments.
Please give me a bit of an idea and I'll organise, no problemo. I'm on nights for the Away Day so won't be seeing you so emails will have to do. My phone no is 0779 299 4702
Have fun

Away Day Notes
More Myers Briggs!
to those who attended. I also attach Pumpkin Soup - a light hearted look at
core functions and a very brief look at managing different types.
I thought the feedback was very fair. I do sometimes tend to go on a bit
and didn't get round to the interactive bit I had planned. I suspect the
Is were happy and that in general it was the Es who would have preferred more
interaction.
I will wait and see what response, if any comes from those who missed out.
We'll keep in touch on that one.
I had a mental block on the big five traits. They are:
* Neuroticism (vs Emotional Stability)
* Extraversion (vs Introversion)
* Openness to experience (vs Closedness to experiences)
* Agreeableness (vs Disagreeableness)
* Conscientiousness (vs Lack of conscientiousness)
For further reading 'Gifts Differing', Myers and Myers is as good as
anything I can recall.
Good luck with your away day.
Best wishes
